Our Vision for Science

At Longfields, we aim to give children the tools they need to thrive in a world where Science, Technology and Engineering and Maths  (STEM) are rapidly growing industries. We want children to consider how they can use scientific knowledge in their lives both now and in the future to develop a lifelong love of science learning. We aim to encourage all children to explore the world around them, using different methods of scientific enquiry to answer their questions and grow their understanding of the world.

Science at Longfields is good when...

  • Children have fun in lessons
  • Lessons are related to the children's interests and their real world experiences
  • Children learn practically, interacting with real life objects
  • Children have input into their curriculum, working with professionals to tailor it to their needs
  • Children share their ideas without fear of making mistakes with misconceptions identified and quickly addressed

In order to achieve this we will...

  • Provide opportunities for children to have input into the science vision and curriculum.
  • Provide an engaging curriculum that works alongside the termly topics in each year group
  • Carry out regular monitoring activities to maintain high standards in teaching and learning
  • Share good practice across the school
  • Encourage self evaluation by both teachers and children to inform future sessions
  • Provide well maintained, up to date resources to support learning
  • Provide teachers opportunities to develop their subject knowledge

Science at Home

Alongside the specific home tasks that are set for children in their classes as part of their homework grids, the Primary Science Teaching Trust have designed some home learning experiments that the children can try to further their interests. They are designed to be easy to do at home, fun, and accessible for everyone so that children of different ages can work together on them as a family.

You can find a selection of them below, or find the whole selection at Science Fun at Home.

Egg-citing Science - Can you save Eggbert?

Science with Ice - Can you rescue a plastic toy from the ice?

World Space Week - Learn about planets, orbits and craters

Sink or Swim - Will an item float or sink?

Rocket Science- Make two rockets, which one works best?

Wow Science is another fantastic collection of resources that is regularly updated and also contains activities from other STEM subjects, particularly coding.

Help Us Bring Science Alive: STEM Parent Volunteers Needed!

To achieve our vision of showing children the value of science beyond the classroom, we want to enrich our curriculum with real-world experiences. If you work or background in a STEM profession (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Maths), your unique insight can help us bring the subject to life!
We are looking for parent volunteers who would be happy to:
  • Inspire our classes by talking briefly about your job and how you use science daily.
  • Support a lesson by helping children with hands-on science experiments and investigations.
Your involvement adds immense value to our curriculum and shows our children where their learning can take them in the future.

If you are able to help us—even just for an hour—please get in touch with Mrs Patel - our Science Lead on mpatel@longfields-primary.org

Science Week

Science Week 2026 refers primarily to British Science Week, a UK-wide celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) running from March 5-14, 2027, with the theme "Creativity: ideas that improve life.", encouraging everyone to challenge the old stereotype that science and creative thinking are completely separate disciplines.
