Welcome to Reception at Longfields Primary and Nursery! In Hedgehogs and Squirrels Class, we focus on building confident learners through clear routines, high expectations, and exciting learning experiences that help children settle quickly and feel safe, valued, and ready to explore.
Our days are carefully planned to capture fundamental learning while supporting each child’s individual interests and needs. Through stories, songs, play, and hands-on activities, children develop key skills across communication, early maths, phonics, and physical development—always with opportunities to try, practise, and succeed.
We believe that strong relationships are at the heart of great progress. Our approach is nurturing and supportive, helping children build friendships, develop independence, and grow in resilience. From first moments in the classroom to celebrating achievements together, we create a caring environment where every child can thrive.
Reception- How we learn
In phonics, we use RWI (Read Write Inc.) to help children develop their early reading and writing skills step by step. Children practise sounds, blending and reading simple words in engaging ways, alongside plenty of book talk to build confidence and enjoyment. We focus on clear progress and careful modelling, so parents know what their child is learning and how to support them at home.
We also prioritise maths from the start, using practical activities that help children understand number, shape and measure in real-life contexts. Our approach aligns with NCETM maths guidance, ensuring children develop a secure understanding of concepts through representation, discussion and problem-solving. You will find regular updates that Evidence me—showing how we observe learning, record progress and celebrate next steps for each child.

Forest School
Our children begin their learning journey through a warm, encouraging approach that blends play with purpose. We focus on developing key early skills such as communication, curiosity and confidence, with lots of opportunities to explore new ideas both indoors and outdoors. As part of our approach, we value forest school and outdoor learning experiences that help children connect with nature, build resilience and learn through hands-on activities.
In our outdoor spaces, children enjoy making discoveries, taking safe risks and working together to create dens for imaginative play. We also use seasonal activities and practical experiences to help children understand the natural world, from observing wildlife to learning how to care for our environment. Throughout the year, we may include special moments such as a cosy fire circle (where appropriate and in line with our safeguarding procedures) to support storytelling, reflection and shared learning. We look forward to working closely with you to support your child’s growth and enthusiasm for learning.
