Year 3 - Hares
Autumn Term
Our Literacy learning this term looks at 4texts:
- Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister
- Oliver Twist - Real Reads Adaptation of Charles Dickens
- Fair's Fair - Leon Garfield
- The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle
Using these texts, we will explore descriptive writing for settings and characters, write diary entry recounts as characters from Victorian Britain, compare characters and create our own version narrative based on events in the stories. Alongside this we will focus on what makes a sentence in Grammar sessions.
In Maths, we spend much of this term extending our learning from Year 2 into 3-digit numbers and exploring how to build, partition, add and subtract with numbers up to 1000. This learning will include applying our understanding of these numbers to measurement contexts with length, mass and capacity.
Our History focus is right back in early civilisation when humans developed their homes, tools and understanding to move through the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. After half term, we will aim to answer the question 'Why do people live near volcanoes?'
In Science, we will learn about how humans and animals are able to survive, including discussions on why we need skeletons, how we move and the nutrients we need to keep our bodies healthy. After half term, we will delve into understanding Forces as pushes and pulls, with a particular focus on Friction and whether it is a useful or unhelpful force.
Design and Technology will see us consider food technology to design and create our own seasonal vegetable tarts. In Art, we move to focus on seeing like an artist and how we can use shading to give the impression of 3D shapes when drawing.
Computing sees us discover how networks work and, after half term, complete some simple programming through Scratch. We learn some basic greeting phrases, numbers, colours and about 10 different animals in French.
PE focuses on cannon and unison in Gymnastics, tactics and team work through our outdoor PE and exploring the weather through Dance. Through PSHE, we explore families and relationships before moving on health and well-being after half term.
On Monday afternoons, Miss Bartlett takes the class for RE and Music. In RE, we cover symbolism of Christianity and whether light is a good symbol for celebrations. In Music, we discover how to write a ballad and use instruments to respond to music and animation with a mountain theme. Hares - Year 3
